Heart vs Mind
Heart vs Mind
(A review of the Bollywood movie "Love Aaj Kal 2020")
The society we are living in decides most of the ways according to which we should live our lives. There are very few people who take the risk of challenging the social script. Probably, they are the ones who believe that there exists something which is beyond 'two plus two is equal to four.' Human thoughts are such a dreadful thing. And human psychology, no doubt, is weird. But after watching the movie "Love Aaj Kal 2020", a lot of my questions were answered. Let's discuss the plot and subject of this movie.
Zoe was a young girl with modern ways of living. She was obsessed with one thing, and that was her career. She wanted only to establish her career and thus avoided falling in a serious love relationship with any boy. Actually this idea was instilled in her mind by her mother because her mother chose to listen to her own heart instead of mind and married her father out of sheer love, putting aside all the concerns of her career. But now she was regretful, that love was nothing, it faded away. "The sky is pink, the air is purple" kind of feelings were very short lived. And money was everything to live this life happily.
A young boy, named Veer, was madly in love with Zoe. He kept on following her wherever she went. One night in the club, Zoe went near Veer to make love with him but he refused to sleep with her saying, "I can have sex with any girl, I don't need you for my sexual satisfaction. You are special." But Zoe exclaimed that she was too busy to fall in any kind of serious relationship with him. What she wanted now was nothing but momentary sexual enjoyment. She would think of a serious love relationship only after she had got the job in Mehta Group of Companies which was her dream. When she went for the interview in that company, she got rejected because she opened the button of her blouse to impress the interviewers. When she came out with a sad face, she told everything to Veer. Veer told her that it was always better to express herself instead of trying to impress others. Because it's good to present the real you in front of others, not that version of yours which they deliberately wanted you to be. But it was far away from Zoe's materialistic attitude towards life. She simply told Veer that he was too different from her and she would not be able to love him ever.
Kabir was the bar owner where Veer and Zoe used to spend most of their time, both sitting away from one another. Zoe told everything to Kabir about Veer and her career. She was impressed by the set life of Kabir with no worries. But Kabir told Zoe that he wished all this to vanish away somewhere so that he could be young Kabir again. Then he started telling his own story to Zoe. He told Zoe that once he fell in love with a girl named Leena. He was studying in a medical college at that time and his childhood dream was to become a doctor in the future. But when the parents of Leena decided to send her to another city so that she could live away from him, he left the college and went after her and they both traveled in the same train looking in each other's eyes all the night. Zoe was shocked to listen to this and she asked Kabir if he really left his career and dream for Leena, for his love. Kabir said, yes, I left everything for Leena, for my love. Zoe was fascinated by this story and she started to observe Veer more closely. She was impressed by Veer and said, "how can one be so perfect as Veer is." Then one night, she burst into tears and told Veer that she had fallen in love with him. She got another job offer from a company in Dubai but she refused to join that company and started living with Veer.
Zoe's mother became very angry on hearing this and warned Zoe that she would regret this decision in near future.
"We all make this mistake of falling in love at this age and the decision taken at this age decides the course of our whole life. So be wise. Listen to your mind, not heart. Or you will regret throughout your life."
But… Human psychology was, no doubt, weird. Zoe didn't pay heed to her mother's advice. She was enjoying the "sky is pink, air is purple" kind of feelings. She went to Kabir to tell him that she had fallen in love with Veer. But when she went there, she was surprised to see Kabir making love to a woman. She thought her to be Leena. But later she realized that she was someone else. She became confused and asked Kabir why he was making love to someone else when his love was Leena for whom he had left everything. Kabir told her that she didn't listen to his full story. He further added,
"It's life, and things happen in life."
Then he resumed his story and told Zoe that when they reached another city, Leena started studying in college and living in a hostel. While he started working in a hotel. Everything was fine for the first five or six months, but then he began to realize that he had taken that decision too early. His love for Leena started to submerge after observing the variety of girls around him. Those girls were always available to him. One night he made love to a girl and satisfied his sexual appetite. Then with another, then with another, and then with another, and then it never stopped. He became addicted to sex and he had no need of Leena to satisfy his addiction. He started to avoid Leena. Leena tried her best to give him all the love but he was no more in need of it. One day he told Leena that he couldn't live with her now, it was over. Leena cried and cried hard. Then she left that city. Zoe interrupted Kabir and told her that it was enough. She didn't want to listen to his story anymore. She went away from there, weeping.
When Zoe met Veer he told her that his parents wanted to meet her. Zoe's mind was much confused but she expressed her willingness. In front of Veer's parents, Zoe became hyper and began telling Veer that they were making a mistake. She asked him what would happen when these momentary feelings of love were over. When these "sky is pink, air is purple'' kind of feelings were no more. Then they would regret this mistake forever. She said that she couldn't do this, she couldn't repeat the mistake of her own mother, her career was more important to her than this relationship. Veer tried his best to stop and console her by saying that he wouldn't let anything of such kind happen. But Zoe said sorry and went away. Mehta Group of Companies offered her the job and she accepted that offer and started working there, establishing her career.
Veer was offered his dream job in some far away region full of natural landscapes and unparalleled beauty. He accepted that offer and went there to work, alone. Zoe was busy in her career and she was becoming very successful. One day her mother asked her how happy and satisfied she was now. Zoe didn't speak. She had forgotten the feelings of happiness and satisfaction. She once again became very confused. She went to Kabir. Kabir recognized her inner confusion and asked her,
"So, how's life?"
Zoe said that life was nothing but a chain of roads all leading to a No-Entry sign, life was nothing but only a bundle of troubles and confusions. Love was nothing but just a set of rules made by society to keep us on the right path. And career and money were nothing but just a method of transforming a human into a machine. She asked Kabir to tell her his story so that she could feel transported to some romantic and peaceful land for some time. Kabir once again resumed his story and told Zoe that for four years he continued to enjoy the sexual pleasure by sleeping with different girls. But then, probably, he was also transformed into a machine. Sex stopped giving him any pleasure. Suddenly, he started calling other girls with the name Leena. He began to avoid other girls. He took the photo of Leena, which was still in his purse, and kept watching it for the whole night. He realized that all the pleasures of this world were temporary but love was eternal which, though subsided for sometime, never diminished from the heart. He went to see Leena happily with the hope of living his life again. But when he saw Leena he realized that she was pregnant. Kabir said that he lost Leena that day, but more importantly, he also lost himself that day. He burst into tears and said that he was finding himself in every person he met but he never found himself after that day. Zoe also started crying. When she came back home, her mother told her that the owner of the Mehta Group of Companies had offered her to marry his grandson. Thinking it ridiculous on her mother's part, she refused that offer and went to see Veer. When she went to Veer, she told her that she was back now, but with all the same old fears. What would happen if these "sky is pink, air is purple" kind of feelings were over and it turned out to be a mistake. Veer smiled and said life, too, would be over one day. This world, too, would be over one day. Everything has to finish one day. But that couldn't stop us from living. He said, "Imagine that I'm on a mountain and now I'm going to make a mistake of jumping from that mountain, will you come with me?" Zoe smiled and said, "let's go."
This interesting plot of the movie indeed gives us some grand lessons. We should not take examples from the life of others. Their life is theirs. Our is ours. There is no comparison at all. If something has happened with someone else, it doesn't mean that will happen with us too. There is a big difference and it is highly unlikely. We should not be afraid of starting anything just because it will end one day. Look, everything declines and ends. Just observe the nature. Observe the moon. For fourteen days its size keeps on growing. But after that it starts declining. Observe the rain. It has started, it has intensified, it has declined, it is over. Leave everything and just observe yourself. You were a kid, you keep on growing, you become a man, then you, too, start declining, then you are no more. Love can also decline with the passage of time, but it never gets diminished. We should neither leave our love for our career, nor our career for our love. Both have their own importance in the life. And, believe me, we can carry on the both with a little effort. We should not try to impress others, but we should express ourselves and present the real version of ours. All the social script is just a bullshit, we should not always blindly follow it. We should think, we should make consultations with our mind, but we should always let our heart take the most important decisions of our lives. All the happiness and satisfaction lies there. I will conclude my article with a quotation which says,
"Just because it's never done, doesn't mean that it can't be done."
